Evaluation part 5

How Did You Attract/Address Your Audience
The first thing my target audience will see when they look at my magazine is the front cover, which means it is very important that I use it to attract my audience. When customers are browsing magazines in a shop they want to see something that interests them and gets there attention, this is what I have tried to with my front covers.

By having two front covers it means that the audience can choose the one they most prefer but could also attract new customers that may not have noticed my magazine before.

Both front cover images are quirky and ‘attention-grabbing’. In the first front cover, my model is holding a microphone whilst singing into to; she is also holding direct eye contact with the audience. The direct eye contact appeals to an audience as they feel as though she is addressing them personally. The microphone emphasises the fact that this is a music magazine.

Another way I have attracted my audience is through the emphasis that my artist is British, I chose to do this as I feel that too much emphasis is put on American artists that people forget about talented British artists, by promoting the fact that she is British I feel it will appeal to my audience as there are several British indie artists that have made it big. I have mentioned other artists on the front cover that fit into the genre so that I can appeal to a wider audience, rather than just focusing on the main article artist.

I used artists that a currently popular and in the charts such as Coldplay and Laura Marling as they are likely to be the artists that my target audience listen to, therefore it would attract them to reading my magazine where they can find out more.

Most of my audience are likely to attend a lot of gigs by there favourite artists, because of this I have made sure I have included lots of gig reviews of popular Indie/Rock artists on my contents page so my audience feel as though they are getting value for money.

Technology has also had an impact on my magazine, through research a became aware that a huge majority of my target audience no longer purchase magazines from a shop but are instead using apps on an ipad, iphone or mobile phones to download music and find out information about there favourite artists.

Therefore I decided to create an app version on my magazine, so that people can purchase the magazine on the go rather than having to go into store. I have also created an advert to appear on billboards for example in train stations on along buses, this way my target audience will be aware that there is a new magazine on the market.

It can also be difficult for my target audience to find the time to visit a store to buy a magazine, for this reason I have made it possible for them to subscribe to he magazine for 12 months, meaning that it will be delivered for there door and they will receive a discount price. This will attract audience members as it is an easy way for them to retain information about there artists.

Growth of first double page spread

I used cam studio to capture the growth of my first double page spread it shows all the different layers that I incorporated into it. It shows how my double page spread went from being very basic and gradually building up to have many layers.

These cam studio recordings also show the differences between each of my double pages, how some were quite simple to make with very few layers, like my first double page spread, whereas others were more intricate with a vast number of layers such as my second double page spread.

Intitial audience feedback- january 2012

This document is my initial feedback which I collected in January 2012. I gathered some of my target audience together and asked them to comment on each page of my magazine. I received positive and constructive feedback from my target audience and also ways in which I could improve. Since receiving this feedback I have taken the relevant steps in order to make the improvement my target audience felt I needed.

Audience feedback of final magazine

Now that I have completed my magazine, I thought it would be a good idea to get feedback from my target audience. I gathered 7 individuals who I considered to be my target audience and spoke to them about my magazine. I handed out each part of my magazine separately and encouraged them to discuss my magazine, pointing out the things they liked and things they felt I could improve on. Whilst filming my feedback, I discovered several things about my magazine which my target audience either hadn’t liked or felt I could improve on, although overall I received positive feedback. It had been pointed out that my audience didn’t like alternative front cover as much as the original as they didn’t feel the image stood out enough in comparison, however they did agree that the image fit the indie genre better. Based on the feedback on the front covers I have decided to keep my magazine as a double cover issue, because like my audience pointed out, both front covers offers something different- either rock or indie, which is the genre of my magazine. Overall I found the feedback very useful as I realised my magazine appealed to my target audience.
